Barbell hold
Holding more than you can pull, which is how a grip catches up with the rest of a deadlift.
What it works
Grip, Forearms, Upper back
How to do it
- 1Load a bar in a rack at about hip height with more than you can deadlift for reps.
- 2Take an overhand grip, stand up with it, and hold.
- 3No straps, no hook grip: the point is the hands.
- 4Set it back on the pins the moment the fingers start to uncurl rather than at the moment they fail.
- 5Holding more than you can pull is what lets a grip catch up with the rest of a deadlift.
Cues that matter
- ›Take it out of the rack and stand
- ›No straps — that defeats the point
- ›Set it down before the fingers open
