Sleeper stretch
Restores the internal rotation that overhead and throwing athletes lose, which is what starts the shoulder impinging.
What it works
Rotator cuff, Shoulders
How to do it
- 1Lie on the sore shoulder with the arm out in front and the elbow bent to ninety degrees.
- 2Use the other hand to rotate the forearm down toward the floor until you feel a stretch at the BACK of the shoulder.
- 3Three holds of thirty seconds.
- 4A pinch at the front means you have gone too far and should back off.
- 5It restores the internal rotation overhead and throwing athletes lose, which is what starts a shoulder impinging.
Cues that matter
- ›Lie on the sore side, elbow at 90° in front of you
- ›Use the other hand to rotate the forearm gently down
- ›A stretch at the back of the shoulder, never a pinch at the front
